Abstract

Studies have shown that sea levels are rising all over the world. These sea levels end up adding salt to many different water sources, such as aquifers. The spreading of salt water can cause an effect on plant growth. Specifically in our experiment we added 200 mg/L of salt when watering our plant, Arabidopsis thalinia, to see if there would be a change in growth versus the plants that were watered with fresh water. After 7 weeks of experimenting, we found that the wild type and mutant A. Thalinia responds differently to salinity. The wild type actually did better in salt water, while the mutant did significantly worse in the salt water. This suggests there may be a specific gene in the wild type that made it able to tolerate the salt water, compared to the mutant which was negatively affected.
