Abstract
This project will discuss the environmental sustainability, business principles, and the ethics of purchasing carbon offsets in higher education using a literature review and developing an analytical framework. The analytical framework will then be applied to a case study on the sustainability initiatives and the purchase of carbon offsets for the University of Lynchburg from the year 2007 to 2024. The University of Lynchburg was the first university in Virginia to become carbon neutral, achieving carbon neutrality in 2021 by purchasing carbon offsets to compensate for their own unreducible emissions.
