Abstract

Multisensory phonics instruction is a powerful tool for promoting reading success among elementary-age children. By engaging multiple senses, this approach allows students to learn the connections between letters, sounds, and meaning in a more effective and efficient manner. However, for this approach to be effective, it is essential for teachers to have a strong foundation in English phonology and orthography. This presentation will discuss the research supporting the use of multisensory phonics instruction, explore the relationship between teacher knowledge and instructional success, provide practical strategies for implementing multisensory phonics instruction, as well as how multisensory phonics has improved student achievement in the presenter’s classroom. By the end of the presentation, attendees will have a better understanding of the importance of multisensory phonics instruction and the key role of teacher knowledge in promoting reading success for all students.
