Abstract

Increased pollution has caused the occurrence of acid rain. Studies have shown that acid rain has a negative effect on plant growth. Acid rain can cause oxidative stress and cellular damage, because of this it is hypothesized that acid rain limits plant growth and chlorophyll content. To determine the effect of acid rain on plant growth, mutant and wild type Arabidopsis thaliana plants were exposed to simulated acid rain. After 9 weeks, the leaf count and bolt height was measured. There was a significant difference in measured bolt height between mutant and wild type plants. The mutants did not respond differently to the acid rain compared to the wild type plants.
