Abstract

Acid rain is an increasing environmental issue due to large industrial pollution, vehicle emission and fossil fuels which release sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere. These pollutants significantly impact the plants growth, plant yield and leaf health. Our study tests whether simulated acid rain (ph 4) affects the growth and plant yield of the wild-type Arabidopsis thaliana plants differently than Arabidopsis thaliana plants with the 25026 gene mutation. The wild-type and mutant Arabidopsis thaliana plants were split into two groups. One group received simulated acid rain made with sulfuric acid with a pH of 4, while the other group received neutral water with a pH of 7. Plants were watered from the bottom twice a week. The experiment group received acid rain once a week, and neutral water the second time we watered them. We measured the plant diameter and the bolt height to compare how the acidic treatment affected the wild-type plants versus mutant plants. The treatment type and plant type significantly affected plant bolt height, with experimental treatment inhibiting bolt height in both cultivars and bolt height being inhibited in mutant type plants. However, rosette diameter showed no significant interaction between treatment type or plant type on rosette diameter.

In conclusion acid rain has a significant inhibiting effect on bolt height of the mutant type 25026.
