Abstract

Phonological awareness is the foundation of reading, playing a central role in word-level reading development for students across elementary grades. Many upper elementary readers have underlying phonological awareness gaps and struggle to decode words, impacting their reading growth. An educator's intentional, targeted intervention and instruction in this area is essential for skilled and confident readers. In this session, educators will learn strategies to identify and address the phonological awareness skills not yet mastered beyond the primary grades. Through evidence-based, systematic, and explicit instruction paired with targeted assessments, this session prepares educators to guide upper-grade students toward phonological awareness mastery using developmental scaffolds and multisensory approaches.
